Vino Bello Wine Tasting and Live Music

web_vinologo3I’ve been making the rounds for Burien wine tasting and I have to say may favorite place for this would be Vino Bello.  Every Saturday from Noon-9:00pm, $10.  Live Music starts at 5pm.  Last Saturday they had GOOSE RIDGE ESTATE VINEYARDS AND WINERY which is a family-owned and operated winery dedicated to limited production, handcrafted wines from select, estate-grown grapes. The Monson family’s vineyard is planted on a south-facing slope in Washington’s Columbia Valley adjacent to Red mountain that consistently yields rich, ripe grapes.  I can say that I didn’t meet one wine that night that I didn’t like.

Plus the added bonus was the Po’ Boys (Vino Bello’s house band) was there.  The Fabulous Po’ Boys play a mix of music, including Beatles, Byrds, Eagles, Jimmy Buffett, Los Lonely Boys, Fountains of Wayne, Crowded House, Van Morrison, Roy Orbison, Oasis, Everly Brothers, Chris Isaak, Paul Simon, Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, Joni Mitchell and other bluesy/rootsy/pop rock gems. Their latest CD, “Turn The Channel,” has bee released and all the original music from all their CDs is available on iTunes.poboys

Vegetarian Soup on Wednesday’s at 909

909-logo1Monday mornings are the best day of the week to go grab a coffee at 909 because my favorite and best barista is working, Corey.  Favorite runner up would be Vivian.  But anyway, I was talking with Tailer, one of the fabulous daytime cooks.  She was preparing a vegetarian soup for Wednesday.  So any local vegetarians can count on a special soup every Wednesday, I hear they’ve been selling out each week.

Don’t bunt, Aim out of the ballpark

Burien senior grabbed life by the tail and never let go

We’re only a few weeks into a brand spankin’ New Year and, so far, I’ve done pretty well on keeping my resolution - getting back into shape.

I decided to join one of those Spinning classes, at the Highline Athletic Club in Burien. I got to class early, so that I could secure a position way in the back - I was there for exercise, not humiliation therapy!

I hadn’t ridden a bike in probably twenty years and I had been warned about the mercilessly hard seats, so I came prepared with a fluffy towel to sit on. I didn’t know that they had gelled seats to loan.

So, while I’m still fumbling around with all of the adjustments, I hear Marilyn, the instructor, bellow out, “Let’s ride!” The music is pounding, the pedals are whirring and there’s a sea of faces with smiles framing their gritted teeth. I hop on my trusty steed, throw my feet into the stirrups and look for someone to place my focus - a mentor for motivation.

Up in the front row, I see a tight, trim wisp of a girl, with perfect muscle definition on her legs and triceps. I’ve found my mentor and put my focus on keeping up with her, as she cranks up the resistance and pounds the pedals. I’m surprised to see that she has grey hair, but then there are a lot of people who grey early. Actually, that’s even better, because we’re probably closer to the same age.

A half hour later, my new mentor is clippin’ along - right on the beat. I, however, am hitting every other beat and have turned the resistance wa-a-ay down to something more manageable. We hit our last “hill” and the ride is over.

As my mentor climbs off her bike, I see that she’s older than I thought. However, before I can get my bike wiped down and make my way over to her, she’s gone with the wind. I find out, from the instructor, that her name is Barb Hunt and she’s 75 years old.

“You gotta be kiddin’ me?!” I blurt out. “I’ve just gotta talk to this little gal.” So I ran through the gym and finally caught up with her. The first thing I noticed was how bright and alert her eyes were and that her perfect posture and whole demeanor is that of a healthy twenty year old. In just a few minutes, I found out why.

Do you need help with better eating habits?

The New Year has begun and I’ve noticed that the gym has been a little busier and more crowded.  Everyone has made their resolution to get in better shape in time for their bday, vacation, reunion or whatever special occasion that’s coming up.  We all start with the best of intentions, but eventually life happens and things seem to get in the way and keep us from changing our ritualistic habits.  Face it, we’re all busy.  Busy with work, kids, chores, obligations.  And we’re lazy, even though we want to change, it just seems sooooo hard to do.  After a while we start feeling crappy about ourselves because we’re not doing what we said we’d do, and it’s much easier to eat some Ben & Jerrys ice cream instead.  Oh, the horrible cycle never ends.  As the special day approaches, we start to panic and decide to go on crash diets, take diet pills, starve ourselves…whatever it takes.. oi vey.  Enough is enough.  Decide right now that you’re worth it to take the time to change your eating habits.  Personally, I love to eat organic produce, it just tastes better.  Sometimes the non-organic can look bigger and better, but it normally has a blander taste than organic.  Because I’m so damn lazy, I like to use FREGGIES.COM.  They make it real simple. I place my produce order on-line and it’s delivered to my door.  If good food is there at your fingertips, you’ll use it.  When we’re hungry and still need to go grocery shopping after work, we tend to buy the bad food because…we don’t care at that moment.  Treat yourself and your family right, buy the good stuff at an affordable price.

Live Music on Saturday nights in Burien

Hey Burien, Don’t forget all the great little places we have around Burien for live musical entertainment on Saturdays. You can actually make your rounds. Start off at Vino Bello because their music is from 5-7pm, then you can head over to 909 Coffee and Wine for more, most musicians usually play from 8-12, and then head over to Sidestreet Kitchen & Bar, they’ve got Sitka Tex playing each Saturday in January, but I believe he plays from 8-11….go check it out! Sitka Tex is great, I went and listened to him last week. Countryish sound and he has a huge cute mustache and a great deep voice and plays the electric guitar and maybe a violin or some other string instrument of some sort that sounded really pretty.
